Women's swimming freshman Carissa Armijo earns honor after winning pair of events against Grand Canyon last weekend
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -Â UNLV women's swimming freshman Carissa Armijo has been named the DC Solar Outstanding Rebel of the Week, the school announced Wednesday.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Armijo, a Houston, Texas, native, helped the Rebels beat Grand Canyon in a dual meet last weekend after picking up a pair of wins in the 200 meter freestyle and the 400 meter individual medley. Her 1:50.85 in the 200 free was a season-best, and was the fastest in that event in the conference this weekend. It is also the 21st fastest time in the MW this season. She won the 400 IM event with a time of 4:29.51, while her season-best time in the event of 4:19.95 is the fifth-fastest time in the league this year. For her performance, she was named Mountain West Swimmer of the Week.
With the regular season in the rearview mirror, the Rebels will have almost two weeks to prepare for the Mountain West Championships, which will take place Feb. 20-23 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
