LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV topped Boise State in nearly every statistical category Wednesday night except in two key areas, as the Broncos moved into sole possession of first place in the conference by holding off the Lady Rebels 64-57 in Mountain West women's basketball action from the Cox Pavilion. The Lady Rebels had rallied from down 12 in the third quarter to take a late lead, but came up short in the come-back attempt to drop to 5-5 in league play, keeping them in a tie for fifth place with Utah State. BSU meanwhile improved to 18-3 overall, 9-1 in the MW.
The Lady Rebels shot a season-low 42.9% (9-of-21) from the free throw line, while the Broncos had just four misses at the charity stripe (14-of-18, 77.8%). BSU also made UNLV pay for its turnovers on Wednesday, as the Lady Rebels turned the ball over 21 times, including 12 in the first half. The Broncos finished the game with a decisive 33-14 advantage on points off turnovers in the seven-point victory.
That offset UNLV's strong defensive play against the league-leading Broncos. Boise State came into the game shooting 47.2% and averaging 74.2 points per game in conference play, but were held way below those numbers by the Lady Rebels as the Broncos finished the game hitting 22-of-60 (36.7%). UNLV also held a 41-36 advantage on the boards.
The Broncos led 16-9 after one quarter and 30-19 at halftime. UNLV scored the first seven of the third quarter to make it a 30-28 contest. though BSU quickly pushed the lead back to 12 at 41-29, and it would be a 46-40 game after the end of the third.
THE TURNING POINT: UNLV opened the fourth on a 7-0 run, going up 47-46 on a Katie Powell three-pointer at the 7:25 mark. The Broncos then scored six unanswered and never trailed again. The Lady Rebels did close within one twice, the last on a long Alyssa Anderson jumper to make it 54-53. The Lady Rebels then went the next three minutes without a point, while BSU scored seven straight for a 61-53 lead. QUOTABLE: "I thought we played really well in the third quarter, but for us, its about making free throws. We started out the game missing them early it kind of dragged on us the whole game. Boise's a good team, they moved the ball around well, they got good looks, but we kept plugging away. I thought we were going to get them in the second half, but good news we still get to play them one more time this year. I thought we started the game flat but came on strong as it went. We needed everyone to show up though and with good energy, we couldn't get into a flow on offense long enough."
- UNLV head coach Kathy Olivier
