CONWAY (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team opened the weekend at the Chanticleer Showdown with a 3-1 come-from-behind win against Austin Peay Friday in Conway, South Carolina. The Rebels' second game against Jacksonville was cancelled due to rain in the area.
With the win, the Rebels improved to 12-3 on the year, marking just the third time in program history they've started 12-3 or better through the first 15 games. The 1993 squad started 12-3 and the 1995 squad began the season 13-2.
While the result was close and UNLV had to overcome a one-run deficit, the result could have been a lot more lopsided as the Rebels left 10 runners on base, which included three straight innings stranding at least two baserunners. Ultimately, UNLV came up with a timely hit and forced a bases-loaded walk to take control of the game and compete the rally.
THE TURNING POINT: UNLV left the bases loaded in the fourth and then saw the Governors break up the scoreless affair with a pair of two-out doubles in the fifth. The Rebels didn't panic, though, and responded in the top of the sixth. Junior
Justine Federe started the rally with a leadoff single that was followed by another single by sophomore
Samantha Diaz. The two took second on third on the throw into the infield and freshman
Julia Vollmer drew a walk to load the bases. That brought up senior
Myranda Bueno, who sent the ball to right field for a single to score Federe from third and tie the game at one. The next batter,
Lauryn Barker, drew a walk to bring home the go-ahead run. The next inning,
Mia Trejo led off with a single and reached second on a
Denise Armendariz sacrifice bunt before Federe doubled to bring Trejo home for some breathing room.
STAT OF THE GAME: The Rebels have allowed two runs or less in nine of its 15 games this year.
REBEL OF THE GAME: After suffering her first loss of the season last weekend, freshman
Jenny Bressler returned to form, allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts in a complete-game performance. She's now 7-1 on the season.
