LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Bryson Stott and
Dillon Johnson combined for four hits and three runs in the UNLV baseball's 4-2 win over the Bradley Braves Sunday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. By virtue of the victory, UNLV racked up its third series win of the season.
The Rebels got on the scoreboard first off a sacrifice fly from
Max Smith and some help from Bradley's starting pitcher, Sam Lund (0-3), in the second inning. Lund, initially, issued a four-pitch walk to
Edarian Williams and then errantly threw past his first baseman on a pickoff attempt to allow the Rebel runner to advance to third base with ease. Smith, who was standing in the batter's box during Lund's error, swung at the first pitch he saw and hit it deep in the air to left for a productive out.
Bradley evened the score at 1-all in the fifth off its third base hit of the inning, a two-out single through the left side of the infield by Luke Shadid.
UNLV answered back in the sixth with three two-out singles of its own as well as a wild pitch from Lund. Stott and Johnson got the frame started with back-to-back singles.
Jack-Thomas Wold provided the third hit, which brought Stott home from third moments after he had advanced a base off interference from Shadid at shortstop. Johnson moved to third on Wold's hit and came home when Lund uncorked a pitch that bounded to the backstop.
Both squads scored once in the eighth, as Bradley got a one-out double to left field by Eli Rawlinson, while UNLV's tally was off a two-out single by Williams.
TURNING POINT: Bradley threatened to even the score at 3-all in the top of the eighth; however, Rebel closer
Jackson Cofer recorded consecutive strikeouts to force the visitors from Peoria, Illinois, to leave the bases loaded. The Braves managed to score once off Rawlinson's RBI double after they had gotten runners on base off a pair of one-out singles. After issuing an intentional walk to load the bases, Cofer retired the next two he faced in a total of 12 pitches.
UNLV reclaimed its two-run advantage moments later with Williams' run-scoring single.
REBEL(S) OF THE GAME: Williams and his teammate
Chase Maddux, who started Sunday's contest on the mound, are deserving of the recognition. Williams went 1-for-2 at the plate with a single and two walks, while playing a role in the Rebels' first and last runs of the game. Maddux, on the other hand, struck out five batters and did not issue a walk, and held the Braves to only one run off of five hits in 6.0 innings of work.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV's 1-4 batters were responsible for all four of the team's runs as well as six of its seven hits. The quartet was also credited with two of the Rebels' three RBI in the win.
QUOTABLE: "That was a hard-fought win against a good club," said head coach
Stan Stolte. "Outside of one play, our defense was great today. (Bryson) Stott and (Edarian) Williams turned two key double plays. Bryson's glove has shown up every day and shouldn't be overlooked. (Chase) Maddux have us six solid innings. (Donavon) McCrystal threw up a zero and Cofer made some great pitches to get the save."
