Smith-Barnett Named Outstanding Rebel Of The Week

Track and field senior Destiny Smith-Barnett picks up third nod after earning First Team All-America Indoor honors last weekend

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV track and field senior Destiny Smith-Barnett has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week, the school announced Wednesday. This is the second time in the last three weeks Smith-Barnett has earned the honor and the third time overall, her first coming on Jan. 16.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

Smith-Barnett, an Oakland, California, native took fourth in the 60 meter finals event at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend with a time of 7.19. The finish earned her First Team All-American honors, becoming the first Rebel to earn a first team indoor all-america nod since Amanda Bingson earned it in the weight throw in 2012. The senior is also the first to pick up a first team honor in a track event since Ashley Owens placed second in the 60 meter in 2006.

Smith-Barnett and the Rebels will begin their outdoor season this week as they host the UNLV Invitational/Sheila Tarr-Smith Multis in Las Vegas, March 14-16.
