LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team couldn't find the same magic it had in a series-opening win Friday over 24th-ranked Boise State as the Broncos returned the favor in game two Saturday with an 11-2 win in five innings over the Rebels. The 11 runs were five more than UNLV had given up in a single game this year, while the run-rule defeat was the first in two years under head coach
Kristie Fox.
The loss snaps a four-game winning streak and moves the Rebels to 20-6 overall on the season and 1-1 in Mountain West play.
The Broncos flipped the script from Friday as they used their own potent offensive attack to take an early lead and stingy pitching by starter Gianna Mancha to stymie the Scarlet and Gray. The Broncos scored runs in all five innings, including three in the first and four in the fifth to put the game away. Mancha allowed two runs on six hits in a complete-game outing to move to 8-2 on the year.
The Rebel pitching staff, who has been lights out of the last few weeks, just didn't have it on Saturday. Junior
Charlie Masterson got the start in the circle and gave up three straight hits to start the game before
Breana Burke relieved her with no outs. The three first-inning runs were credited to Masterson, who was tagged with the loss to move to 4-2 on the year. Burke also wasn't as sharp today, allowing four runs on six hits in 4.0 inning pitched before Masterson re-entered in the fifth.
The UNLV offense scattered two runs and six hits over five innings to avoid the shutout, but Mancha held the Mountain West's best offense in check for most of the afternoon. Only five Rebels recorded a hit in the game with senior
Myranda Bueno being the lone one to record multiple.
THE TURNING POINT: The 3-0 deficit after the first inning didn't feel insurmountable, but after Boise State added one run on a solo home run in the second and another run on two hits in the third to make it 5-0, the task seemed daunting. Especially after Bronco starter Mancha limited the Rebels to just two hits an no runs over the first three frames. Once BSU made it 7-0 in the fourth, the Broncos were firmly in control.
STAT OF THE GAME: The nine-run loss was the largest defeat for UNLV in two years under Fox, while the 10-run deficit was the largest they've faced all season.
UP NEXT: The series rubber match is set for Sunday at 12 p.m. at Eller Media Stadium.
