LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels suffered a 7-6 loss to the UNR Wolf Pack in the finale of their three-game, Mountain West series at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels carried a three-run lead, 6-3, into the ninth inning, but surrendered three in the frame and then allowed the go-ahead run to score in the 10th.
Both teams sit at 4-5 in the conference standings, while UNR improved to 12-10 overall and UNLV sits at 14-11. The loss snapped the Rebels' three-game win streak over the Wolf Pack that dates back to a victory at the 2018 Mountain West Championships in San Diego. Despite the loss, the Scarlet & Gray has claimed six of the last eight meetings in the head-to-head series.
The game was sent to extras when UNR scored three runs to draw even at 6-all in the top of the ninth; however, UNLV had an opportunity to win the contest in walk-off fashion in its half of the fame, but was unable to push across the game-winner after it had a runner to third base with no outs.
The Wolf Pack began the ninth getting two runners on base off walks issued by Rebel reliever
Conner Woods. With two on and one out, UNLV summoned
Jackson Cofer from the bullpen, but the first batter he faced hit a grounder to second base that was misplayed and allowed one run to score. The next batter, Conor Allard, hit a game-tying, single back up the middle to bring home two runs.
UNR took its only lead of the contest in the 10th inning when Justin Zamora hit a 1-1 offering from UNLV reliever
Paul Richy (1-1) over the left-field fence.
The game featured four different three-run spurts by the Rebels and Wolf Pack, with the squads alternating scoring. UNLV opened the contest with three runs in the first off a two-run single from
Max Smith and an RBI single from
Grant Robbins. UNR drew even with three straight tallies off a groundout in the fourth and a two-run homer in the fifth. The Rebels got their second three-run swing over the fifth and sixth, with an RBI single from
Dillon Johnson and a sac fly from
Jack-Thomas Wold in the fourth, and an RBI single from
Austin Pfeifer in the sixth.
REBEL OF THE GAME: UNLV starter
Chase Maddux received a no decision after going 6.0 innings on the mound against the Wolf Pack. Maddux struck out three and allowed two earned runs (three total) off of seven hits to UNR. He induced 13 groundouts to two flyouts.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV stranded a total of 10 runners in the game, which hindered the team's ability to build upon its three-run lead. Delving deeper, eight of those 10 were left on base over the sixth through ninth innings. Although they scored once in the sixth, the Rebels left runners on second and third in the frame as well as in the seventh. The offense also left one at first in the eighth and three in the ninth.
QUOTABLE: "That's a tough one to give away," said head coach
Stan Stolte. "We had a chance to sweep a very, good team and couldn't get it done. We didn't throw strikes, make plays or execute offensively late in the game to win this one."
SILVER STATE SERIES UPDATE: The three points associated with the sport of baseball in the Silver State Series will potentially come down to the three-game, Mountain West series in Reno in mid-April (18-20). The Rebels hold a 2-1 edge in the head-to-head series after taking two of three from the Wolf Pack this weekend in Las Vegas.
To date, UNLV owns a three-point lead – 13.5 to 10.5 – over UNR in the all-encompassing athletic and academic competition sponsored by IBEW and Nevada Donor Network. There are seven sports and a total of 24 points remaining to be awarded, including three for an academic component (NCAA APR).
