Rebels Silence Lobos Behind Hare's No-Hit Bid

UNLV baseball and New Mexico will close out the Mountain West series at noon Sunday.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels' Ryan Hare struck out a career-high eight batters and carried a no-hit bid through 8.2 innings in Saturday's 8-0 shutout of the New Mexico Lobos at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebel offense provided Hare all the run support he needed with two runs in the first inning, as the right-handed pitcher silenced the Lobo offense until the ninth when it recorded a two-out single.

Hare (4-2), the reigning MW Pitcher of the Week, began the game walking the first batter he faced; however, he settled down and retired the next eight batters he faced, four of which were strikeouts. He walked one more with two outs in the third, but got a ground out to end the frame to start a stretch that saw him retire the following 18. With two outs in the ninth, the redshirt-junior worked the count full, but the would-be final pitch was deemed a ball; thus, walking the batter. Hayden Schilling then stepped up to the plate and hit a single through the left side of the infield to nullify the potential no-hitter.

Rebel reliever Conner Woods came into the game to record the final out, a strikeout, to preserve the one-hitter – the first by UNLV pitching since D.J. Myers and Joey Lauria only allowed one hit in a 2-1 loss to Fresno State on Feb. 28, 215.

Both teams sit at 5-6 in the Mountain West with one contest remaining in the three-game series. Sunday's rubber game will now start at 12:00 pm – one hour earlier than the previously scheduled start time. For the year, the Scarlet & Gray sits 17-12 and has won three of its last four games and six of its last eight, while the Cherry & Silver sits level at 13-13, having lost seven of its last eight.

With the win, the Scarlet & Gray improved to 17-12, and has won three of its last four games and six of its last eight. UNM, on the other hand, sits at 13-13, but has lost seven of its last nine.

The Rebels were paced offensively by Jack-Thomas Wold who scored three times and added two RBI off of two hits. Wold gave the home side an early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the first. He scored the next two runs off RBI doubles by Max Smith and and Grant Robbins in the fourth and eighth, respectively. Robbins' extra-base hit brought home the first two scores in the five-run eight, with two more coming off a single by James Gamble and a bases-loaded walk issued to Dillon Johnson.

REBEL(S) OF THE GAME: Hare and Wold are worthy of sharing the honor, as the former pitched a gem and the latter played a key role in the offense's eight-run outburst.

STAT OF THE GAME: Hare threw a total of 126 pitches with 79 of those going for strikes. He was nearly even in his method of recording outs, as he struck out eight and induced eight groundouts and 10 fly outs.

QUOTABLE: "That was a great effort by Ryan (Hare)," said head coach Stan Stolte. "He deserved a no-no. It was unbelievable he didn't get rewarded. The kid pitched his heart out. Hopefully, we can ride that momentum into tomorrow's game against a very good team."
