LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels suffered a 7-4 loss to the New Mexico Lobos in the series finale at Earl E. Wilson Stadium Sunday. The Rebels (17-13 overall, 5-7 MW) led by one, 2-1, after the first inning of play, but their offense went silent until the ninth inning, as the visiting Lobos (14-13, 6-6 MW) pulled away over the next three frames en route the victory, and securing the series win, two games to one.
The first inning was nearly identical for both UNM and UNLV, as each got their first three batters on base before a double play and a groundout ended the at-bats. The Lobos began the game with three straight singles – the third of which produced their first run. The Rebels answered back getting a leadoff walk to
Bryson Stott before
Dillon Johnson and
Jack-Thomas Wold connected on back-to-back singles – the last of which brought home a run and tied the game at 1-all. Moments after Stott scored off Wold's base hit, Johnson came home when
Edarian Williams grounded into a double play.
The Lobos evened the scored off RBI singles from Tanner Baker and Jeff Deimling in the second and third, respectively, to reclaim the one-run edge at 3-2. They added to their scoring haul in the fourth with three runs; Reese O'Farrell had a two-run triple and Justin Watari had a sacrifice fly.
The visitors from Albuquerque upped their lead to five runs, 7-2, when Hayden Schilling produced an RBI single in the sixth.
After leaving nine runners on base between the second and eighth, UNLV was finally able to get some runners home in the ninth. The Rebels loaded the bases off a pair of singles and a walk, and then got an RBI single from Williams and a sacrifice fly from
Max Smith to pull within two, 7-4, late in the at-bat. Unfortunately, the final batter struck out and two more runners were stranded.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Stott scored two of UNLV's four runs and reached base four times with three walks and one hit. Additionally, he was perfect in the field on three chances, recording two assists and one putout. He started a 6-3 double play in the first.
STAT OF THE GAME: The teams combined to strand 19 runners on the bases, with nine of those left behind in scoring position; five by UNLV and four by UNM. Each squad stranded a runner in all but two innings of play.
QUOTABLE: "I'm very disappointed in everything overall; not just the result," said head coach
Stan Stolte. "We played with no intensity or baseball smarts. Conference games are so hard to win and you can't just show up and wait for the other team to hand you the win."
