Rebels Capture First Series Win At San Diego State Since 2005

UNLV beats San Diego State 7-2 in game two Saturday night

SAN DIEGO, CA (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team accomplished a feat at SDSU Saturday the program hadn't seen in 14 years - a series win over the Aztecs in San Diego. The Rebels cruised to a 7-2 victory in game two to capture the series victory, marking the first time since 2005 UNLV had done so away from Eller Media Stadium and first time since 2016 the Scarlet and Gray had taken two of three.

UNLV is now 24-7 overall and 5-2 in Mountain West play, marking the third-best start through 31 games behind the 1991 and 1995 squads, who each went 25-6 to start the season.

Saturday's script was similar to Friday as the Scarlet and Gray built a 5-0 lead through three innings, but in game two an Aztec rally never materialized as the home team didn't get closer than four runs thanks to a strong outing from junior Breana Burke. The right-hander recorded her fourth complete game, giving up just two runs - none earned - on four hits with five strikeouts for her fifth win.

THE TURNING POINT: As has been the case more often than not this year, the Rebels jumped out to an early lead after a Kiley Harrison triple scored Trejo for a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The next frame, Bondi led off with a solo home run - the first traditional home run of her career (had an inside-the-park home run earlier this season) - then a Lauren Tycksen walk and a Justine Federe single set up a three-run shot by MIa Trejo for the 5-0 lead. UNLV added a run in the fourth and a run in the sixth and the game was never in doubt.

STAT OF THE GAME: It was the third multi-home run game of the season for the Rebels, giving them 19 total in 2019 - just one shy of the 20 they had all of last year with 19 games left to play.

CO-REBELS OF THE GAME: Outside of a two-run fifth, Burke completely shut down the Aztecs. She held SDSU without a hit through three innings and faced just two batters over the minimum until there were two outs in the fifth. Both Aztec runs were unearned. Trejo continues to be lights out during conference play with another stellar day at the plate - 2-for-4 with the three-run dinger, three RBI and two runs scored. It was her team-leading sixth home run of the year - a career high.

UP NEXT: The Rebels will go for their first ever three-game sweep over San Diego State in program history Sunday. First pitch is set for noon at SDSU Softball Stadium.

REBEL NOTES:
* The 24-7 record is the best start since the 1995 squad went 25-6
* The Rebels have only gone unbeaten against the Aztecs in a season three other times in program history - 1986 (4-0), 1994 (2-0) & 2005 (4-0)
* UNLV is now 20-1 when it scores first in the game
* UNLV needs nine wins to match last year's total of 33 with 19 games still left to play
* It was an unusual day for the defense as the Rebels committed a season-high four errors in the game, but ultimately it didn't hurt them. It was just the third time the Rebels had committed more than one error in a game this year and have just 18 in 31 games
* Trejo's hitting streak now stands at seven games - encompassing the first seven games of conference play. During that time, she's gone 11-for-19 (.579) with 15 RBI, six runs scored, one double, three runs home and five walks. The sophomore has also reached base safely in 10 straight games
* Bueno extended her hitting streak to six games with a 1-for-4 night. During that stretch she's now 8-for-17 (.471) at the plate
* Harrison, while she isn't an everyday starter, has taken advantage of her opportunities at the plate, particularly during MW games. She now has a six-game hitting streak (over games she's appeared in) and is 8-for-12 (.667) with one double, one triple, three RBI and two runs scored against Mountain West competition
* The Rebels have recorded double digit hits in 16 of 31 games and scored six or more runs in 17 of 31 games
* The Rebels pitching staff has an ERA of 2.00 and has allowed three runs or fewer in 23 of 31 games
* Rebels continue to outscore its opponents 176-66
