LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com)Â - The UNLV softball team closed out the weekend on a high note, completing the sweep over Cal Baptist Saturday with a 6-4 win over the Lancers at Eller Media Stadium. While the score was identical to the final of game two's comeback win for UNLV, Saturday's script read much different as the Rebels jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never trailed.
The victory moves UNLV to 31-13 overall and wraps up their non-conference regular season slate, which saw the Rebels go 22-5 outside the Mountain West. The Scarlet and Gray will finish out the final two weeks of the regular season with the Silver State Series showdown at UNR, May 3-5, before returning home May 9-11 to host New Mexico on senior weekend.
Freshman
Jenny Bressler made her second start and picked up her third win of the series with a complete-game performance in the finale. For the weekend, the right-hander gave up just three earned runs in 16.1 innings pitched to go along with 15 strikeouts, reaching the 20-win plateau in just her first collegiate season.
THE TURNING POINT:Â UNLV took a 2-0 first-inning lead on a
Denise Armendariz two-run single, but the Lancers tied it up at two in the very next frame. That changed in the bottom of the third when
Justine Federe sent a bomb over the left field wall to help the Rebels regain the lead at 3-2. The next inning, with two on, junior
Lauren Tycksen blasted a triple to left center to score both runners and make it 5-2, then
Reina Bondi brought Tycksen home with her second sacrifice fly of the weekend for a 6-2 lead. Cal Baptist would get a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh, but Bressler got a line out with the bases loaded to seal the win in the seventh.
STAT OF THE GAME:Â Six was the magic number this weekend on offense as it has been all season. Rebels scored six runs in each of the three wins and have yet to lose in 2019 when they score six or more runs in a game.
CO-REBELS OF THE GAME:Â The trio of Armendariz, Federe and Tycksen were on fire Saturday as the three combined to go 8-for-11 at the plate, accounting for five RBIs and four runs scored. The three were also the top three hitters on the weekend.
UP NEXT:Â Rivalry weekend is up next as the Rebels head north for the Silver State Series with the Wolf Pack, May 3-5, in Reno next weekend. The Rebels took two of three in Las Vegas last spring.
