Game Recap: Baseball |

Rebels Sweep Saturday's Doubleheader

UNLV Baseball outscored New Mexico 22-10, with a 4-2 win in game one and an 18-8 triumph in game two.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels swept Saturday's Mountain West doubleheader against the New Mexico Lobos at Santa Ana Star Field Saturday. The Rebels and Lobos opened the day with a tightly contested, 4-2 affair; however, the second game played out much differently, as the Scarlet & Gray posted season highs in both runs and hits in its 18-8 victory over the Cherry & Silver.

With the wins, the Rebels improved to 27-23 overall and 14-12 in the MW. The Lobos, on the other hand, saw their marks drop to 20-27-1 and 8-15-1, respectively.

UNLV's offense outscored UNM by 12 runs, 22-10, and registered six more hits, 30-24, and 10 more RBI, 20-10. The Rebels hit .390 on the day with 29 hits coming from eight players that started both contests. Six players hit .400 or better with a minimum of three hits, with Max Smith leading the squad with a .571 average (4-for-7). Bryson Stott posted a .556 average (5-for-9) with Dillon Johnson (6-for-12) and Jack-Thomas Wold (3-for-6) hitting .500 apiece. Stott led the team in scoring with seven runs, with Wold second with five tallies.

QUOTABLE: "It was a tough emotional day, and I tip my hat to Ray (Birmingham, UNM's head coach) and the UNM players for the way they handled this horrible situation," said UNLV head coach Stan Stolte. "We played well all around. I'm proud of the way we went about our business today, also. Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with the Weller family and the New Mexico program."

PREGAME: Prior to first pitch Saturday, UNLV joined UNM in a moment of silence and prayer around the pitching mound in remembrance of Jackson Weller, a member of the Lobo baseball team, who tragically lost his life last Friday night.

GAME ONE BRIEF: The Rebels staked themselves to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back en route to the 4-2 triumph. Stott scored three times in the game following his first three plate appearances, which were a single, an intentional walk and a walk. Wold was credited with two of the first three RBI, as he knocked Stott in both time with a fielder's choice in the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the third. Johnson had one RBI – a single that scored James Gamble – that came prior to Wold's third-inning tally. Stott's final run came in the fifth off a groundout by Edarian Williams.

UNM pushed across one run in both the third and sixth innings, with each score coming off a single.

UNLV's Cameron Jabara (2-5) earned the win in 5.2 innings with one strikeout against two runs, eight hits and four walks. Paul Richy notched the save – his first of the year – in 3.1 frames of scoreless and hitless relief, retiring all 10 batters he faced.

The Lobos' Justin Slaten (4-5) took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) off five hits and five walks, with eight strikeouts.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Stott reached base safely in four of five plate appearances, with two hits and two walks. He scored three of the Rebels' four runs.

STAT OF THE GAME: The teams left seven runners on base apiece; however, UNM stranded five in scoring position as opposed to only three by UNLV. The Lobos Jeff Deimling was stuck at third base three times when the final out was recorded in the second, fourth and sixth innings.

GAME TWO BRIEF: The Rebels found themselves chasing a one-run deficit, 2-1, after the Lobos outscored them in the opening frame. After a scoreless second, UNLV pushed across four runs in the third and five more in the fourth to claim an eight-run edge, 10-2. The Lobos offense managed to score twice each in the fifth, seventh and eighth; however, the Rebels maintained their healthy lead by scoring eight over the seventh and ninth inning at-bats.

Wold got the scoring started with a solo homer in the first and kept it going with a run in the third and three more later in the affair. He led the squad with five runs, while Stott followed closely behind with four of his own. Johnson touched home plate three times, and Smith and Williams did so twice each.

Johnson, Smith and Williams led the Rebels with four hits apiece, while Stott and Wold had three each. Williams and Austin Pfeifer paced the scoring with both knocking in three RBI, while Wold, Smith, Seth Mullis and Grant Robbins added two each.

UNLV's Bradley Spooner (2-2) picked up the win in 2.1 innings of relief, coming on after Ryan Hare threw the first 3.0 innings. Spooner allowed two runs off four hits and one walk.

UNM's Drew Gillespie (2-6) was stuck with the loss after going 2.2 in the start. Gillespie was touched for five runs off eight hits and one walk, with two strikeouts.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Wold reached base safely in six of seven plate appearances, recording three hits (two singles and one homer) and three walks, and scored a team-high five runs.

STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV's 18 runs, 25 hits, five doubles, three sacrifice flies and 33 total bases in the nightcap were both season highs, while its 16 RBI tied the team's output against Washington State on March 12.
