Texas Transfer Elijah Mitrou-Long To Join Runnin' Rebel Program

6-foot-1-inch guard is a graduate transfer and will be eligible to play at UNLV as a senior this season.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's basketball program received a signed commitment from Elijah Mitrou-Long, head coach T.J. Otzelberger announced Tuesday.

Mitrou-Long, pronounced MEE-true, is a graduate transfer from the University of Texas who will enroll at UNLV this fall. The 6-foot-1-inch guard will be eligible to play as a senior for the Runnin' Rebels during the 2019-20 season.

The third commitment at UNLV under Otzelberger, Mitrou-Long, originally from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, played in 36 of Texas' 37 games (started nine) as a junior this season, averaging 5.6 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game in 17.9 minutes played per contest for the NIT Champions. The Longhorns ended the season with an overall record of 21-16 and finished sixth in the Big 12 Conference.

"We are excited Elijah chose to finish his college career at UNLV," Otzelberger said. "He is a winner, is highly competitive and will give us a dynamic playmaker at the guard position. He can really push the pace, has the ability to make shots and can also play off the ball."

Mitrou-Long sat out the 2017-18 season at Texas as a redshirt after transferring from Mount St. Mary's where he played as freshman and sophomore (2015-17) and was a teammate of fellow incoming Runnin' Rebel Jonah Antonio. Mitrou-Long averaged 10.7 points, while making 37.0 percent from 3-point range during his two years with the Mountaineers. As a sophomore he earned First Team All-Northeast Conference honors, while averaging 15.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.6 steals in 34.4 minutes per game.

Mitrou-Long attended John Carroll High School in Bel Air, Maryland. Otzelberger has known his family for years as he coached and recruited his older brother, Nazareth, at Iowa State. He is now in the NBA with the Utah Jazz.

Mitrou-Long joins Jonah Antonio and Moses Wood as part of the Runnin' Rebels' 2019 recruiting class.
