Softball freshman pitcher Jenny Bressler earns honor after leading Rebels to a home sweep over New Mexico last weekend
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball freshman Jenny Bressler has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week, the school announced Wednesday. This is the second time this spring Bressler has earned the honor.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Bressler, from Canton, Michigan, helped the Rebels capture the series sweep over New Mexico at home in the final weekend of the season, going 2-0 with a 0.57 ERA and 17 strikeouts. The freshman allowed just one run on five hits in 12.1 innings pitched against the Lobos. In the 2-1 series-opening win, she pitched a complete game, giving up one run on three hits while tallying a season-high 11 strikeouts. She made the start in game two and pitched one inning, striking out two of the three batters she faced in the eventual 8-0 six-inning UNLV victory. The righty made her third start in the 2-0 series finale win Sunday, allowing one hit in 4.1 innings pitched with four more strikeouts to pick up her 23rd win of the season. Her 23 wins in 2019 led the Mountain West and were the most by a freshman since former Rebel standout Amanda Oliveto had 21 in 2011. The wins also rank eighth all-time in a single season in program history.
Her impressive freshman campaign was rewarded this week as she earned a Mountain West All-Conference First Team selection.
The Rebels finished the 2019 season with a 36-14 record and a 14-9 league mark to finish third in the conference. The 36 wins are the most since the 2007 squad won 37, while UNLV has managed back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time since 2009-2010. The Scarlet and Gray just missed out on their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2009 as they were one of the first four teams out on Selection Sunday.
