Women's tennis senior Aiwen Zhu earns honor after leading Rebels to upset win over No. 26 Texas Tech in NCAA First Round last weekend
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - For the second consecutive week, UNLV women's tennis senior Aiwen Zhu has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week, the school announced Wednesday. This is the third time this spring Zhu has earned the honor.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Zhu, from Wuxi, China, upset the nation's No. 22 singles player, Felicity Maltby, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, to help her team to a 4-3 upset of No. 26 Texas Tech in the NCAA First Round Saturday in Los Angeles. The senior was also in the lead of three other matches on the weekend - a doubles match against the Red Raiders, a doubles match against USC on Sunday in the second round and a singles match against the Trojans Sunday - when the contests were halted.
While the team portion of the season is over after the second-round loss to USC, Zhu will play in the NCAA Division I Singles Championship May 20-25. She becomes just the fourth UNLV women's player in history to earn back-to-back singles trips by securing the league's automatic bid to the field of 64 as the highest ranked player in the Mountain West.
