LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV came out flat on offense to start the night and Santa Clara took advantage by scoring three goals in the first 53 minutes for a 3-1 victory over the Rebels Sunday night from Johann Memorial Field.
The Rebels were actually outshot 9-1 in the first half but managed to weather that storm thanks to
John Lynam's first career goal, coming on the lone Rebel shot of the opening 45 minutes. That knotted the score at 1-1 after the Broncos had scored the first goal in the 17th minute. It was the first goal in Lynam's career as a Rebel.
SCU then opened the second half with two goals in the first eight minutes for a 3-1 advantage, and at one point held a 15-3 edge on shots. UNLV stepped up its scoring chances, narrowly missing on a pair of free kicks just outside the box, but could not find the back of the net again and would fall by the two score margin.
UNLV finished the game having been outshot 16-7, and 9-2 on shots on goal. The Rebels did post six saves on the night and had four corner kicks.
The WAC season opener is next for UNLV, as the Rebels host UTRGV Saturday night at 7 pm at Johann Field.
