SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - Â UNLV suffered its worst offensive performance on the season Saturday, with season-lows in both points (39) and field goal percentage (24.2%) in a 48-39 loss at San DIego State in Mountain West women's basketball action from Viejas Arena. The loss dropped UNLV back to .500 at 10-10 overall, and the Lady Rebels remained in a tie for third place with Boise State (6-3) in the MW standings. SDSU meanwhile improved to 9-13 on the season, 4-6 in league play with its fourth MW home win in five tries.
Nothing went right for UNLV on the offensive side right from the tip, as the Lady Rebels missed their first nine shots from the floor, and were held to just six points total in both the first and second quarters. UNLV had a better showing from its defense, allowing just 23 first half points from the Aztecs to only trail 23-12 at the break. The third quarter was the best offensively for UNLV, shooting 46.2% on the way to outscoring the home team 16-13 to make it a 36-28 game entering the final quarter.
The Aztecs only managed two baskets in the first four minutes of the fourth, but they were both three-pointers while UNLV was held scoreless, giving SDSU its largest lead to that point, 42-28 with 6:11 on the clock. UNLV did go on a 6-0 run to close within eight, but could not close any further, scoring just five more points the rest of the game to suffer just its second loss of the 2020 calendar year.
STAT OF THE GAME:Â UNLV missed all 11 of its three-point attempts, and despite holding a top-five three-point field goal defense, allowed the Aztecs to hit 6-of-20 for 30%, giving SDSU an 18-point advantage from three-point land.Â
QUOTABLE: "SDSU was active on defense and we just needed to be better with the ball, we turned it over too much at the start and didn't recover. We also have to be stronger inside, we dominated the boards and when you get that many offensive rebounds you have to score off them. We didn't do that today and it hurt us."Â
