Rebels Fall Short At San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – Undefeated San Jose State (4-0/4-0) spoiled the homecoming of its former quarterback, UNLV head coach Marcus Arroyo, as the Rebels (0-4/0-4) fell 34-17 on a cold Saturday night at CEFCU Stadium.
 
The Rebels scored first with a short field goal but saw SJSU put up 17 straight points en route to a 24-10 advantage at halftime. UNLV pulled to within one score in the third quarter before SJSU tallied the final 10 points of the game.
 
UNLV's two quarterbacks, Max Gilliam and Justin Rogers, combined to complete 19-of-28 attempts for 224 yards and no turnovers.
 
PLAYER OF THE GAME:
True freshman WR Kyle Williams posted the team's first 100-yard receiving game of the season with a career-high nine receptions for 110 yards, including one touchdown.
 
STAT OF THE GAME:
SJSU recorded seven sacks to UNLV's one, which led to the hosts out-rushing the visitors 176-70.
 
QUOTABLE:
"We talk about not letting UNLV beat UNLV but you can't make those kinds of mistakes we did tonight and beat a good football team, which is what San Jose State is. We saw some growth in some areas and these guys will respond and come back and get ready for next week."

REBEL NOTES:
-UNLV has lost six straight games at SJSU, dating back to its last win here in 1993 when both teams were members of the Big West Conference
-First-year UNLV head coach Marcus Arroyo returned to SJSU for the first time since his last season as a member of the Spartans' coaching staff in 2008
-Arroyo also lettered three times at quarterback for SJSU between 1998-2002
-True freshman Zyell Griffin made his first career start at WR and caught three passes for 68 yards
-UNLV's 28-yard field goal on its opening drive marked the first time this season that the Rebels scored first in a game
-The field goal improved Daniel Gutierrez to 5-of-6 on the season and 21-of-27 in his career
-Justin Rogers entered the game at QB in the second quarter and quickly drove his team to its first touchdown of the night
-Rogers, a sophomore transfer from TCU, found freshman Kyle Williams from 19 yards out to mark the first TD pass for both players
-Safety Tre Caine, who is a walk-on transfer from Colgate, hauled in the Rebels' first interception of the season in the second quarter
-Sophomore Jacoby Windmon recorded UNLV's only QB sack of the game in the third quarter which gave him a team-leading 4.5 on the season. Windmon also led the squad with eight total tackles and added a forced fumble vs. the Spartans
-Senior running back Charles Williams was limited to just 55 yards on 19 carries but his four-yard touchdown rush in the third quarter gave him 17 for this career, putting him all alone in 10th place at the school
 
NEXT FOR THE REBELS:
UNLV continues on the road by making a trip to Colorado State for the second consecutive season. The Rebels will face the Rams Saturday starting at 2:30 pm PT on FS2. The next home game is Friday, Nov. 27 against Wyoming.
