Defense End Jacoby Windmon Earns Honorable Mention All-Conference
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- UNLV wide receiver Kyle Williams has been named the 2020 Mountain West Freshman of the Year and defensive end Jacoby Windmon earned Honorable Mention All-MW, as the conference announced its annual postseason awards Tuesday.
Williams (Hawthorne, CA/St. Monica Catholic High School) stands third in the nation and shattered the school record for receptions-per-game by a freshman with 5.8 this season, besting the 5.0 number set by 2014 MW Freshman of the Year Devonte Boyd. With just six games played, Williams led the Rebels with 35 receptions for 426 yards and two touchdowns. On Saturday at Hawai'i, he became the 21st Rebel to reach double-digits for receptions in a game -- and the first since Boyd in 2016 -- with a total of 10 for a career-high 144 yards and his second score this fall. He also caught nine passes for 110 yards and a touchdown playing at undefeated San Jose State last month.
"I am proud of Kyle for the way he produced on the field and even more so for the way he represented himself, his family and our new UNLV football program," said UNLV head coach Marcus Arroyo. "His toughness, work ethic and leadership – especially as a true freshman and amidst the adversity of this pandemic – comprise a testament to his character. We are only scratching the surface of a future as bright as the lights of Las Vegas."
Williams is the third wide receiver and seventh Rebel overall to be named a conference freshman of the year and fifth since the Mountain West formed in 1999.
Windmon (New Orleans/John Ehret High School) led the Rebels in quarterback sacks with five. His sacks-per-game average of .83 tied for fourth in the MW and 20th in the nation. The sophomore finished second on the team with 39 total tackles and added two pass breakups and a forced fumble. Even playing just six games, his sack total was the highest by a Rebel in a season since 2013.
