Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Rebels Force OT Before Falling 77-75 To Pacific

UNLV trailed by 12 in the fourth quarter before the eventual double-overtime loss.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -  Pacific scored the game-winning basket with just over three seconds left while UNLV's tying field goal was ruled to have come after the final buzzer, allowing the Tigers to escape with a 77-75 double-overtime victory over the Lady Rebels Sunday afternoon from the Thomas & Mack Center. The game was the third in this year's Dual In The Desert, which will see UNLV close out by hosting Loyola Marymount Monday at 1 pm.

In a game that saw several swings, Pacific looked to have the game in hand with a 12-point lead to start the fourth quarter. However, the Lady Rebels completely shut down the Tigers over the final eight minutes of that quarter. Following a Tigers layup to make the score 58-47, UNLV would allow just two points the rest of regulation. The Lady Rebels slowly chipped away at the lead, with first a 4-0 run to close within 58-51. Pacific then scored its final two points of the quarter at the line with six minutes to go for a 60-51 lead. The Lady Rebels answered with the next seven points to make it a 60-58 game. Desi-Rae Young then picked up her fifth foul, leaving the game but sending Pacific to the line where they missed both shots with 50 seconds to play. UNLV took advantage with a layup by Delaynie Bryne to tie the game at 60-60 with 20 seconds on the clock, sending the contest to overtime.

FIRST OVERTIME RECAP: UNLV came out firing to start the extra period, hitting a trey and a short jumper and then adding two free throws with 2:32 on the clock for a 67-62 lead. Pacific however answered with five straight of its own, and neither team scored in the final 78 seconds, leading to a second overtime.

SECOND OVERTIME RECAP: The Lady Rebels were on their heels the entire second overtime, as Pacific opened with a three-point play 16 seconds in and would never trail. UNLV tied the game, and following another Pacific three-point play, Byrne nailed her fourth trey of the day to again knot the score, this time at 73-73. The teams again traded points, free throws from Pacific, a layup from Bailey Thomas, but the game came down to the final 30 seconds when the Tigers came up with three offensive rebounds by Brooklyn McDavid. Her third and final rebound led to a putback with three seconds left for the game-winning score. UNLV advanced the ball with a timeout and Anna Blount was able to get off a shot despite contact that was initially ruled good, before a review confirmed the shot was after the clock hit zero.

LADY REBEL OF THE GAME: Junior Nia Johnson notched her first career double-double with career-highs in points (19) and rebounds (12) while also going 8-of-10 at the free throw line.

STAT OF THE GAME: Pacific held a decided advantage on points off the bench, an area UNLV had usually excelled in so far this season. The Tigers finished with a 25-6 edge, as Keyana Wilfred and Blount combined for all six Lady Rebel bench points.

QUOTEABLE: "Hard fought game tonight. Pacific, a very well coached team, they played really hard. I think our team played hard, I didn't question our effort, but I think our execution at certain points could have been better. We had a good start, then they went on a run, and we made our own run in the fourth quarter. Defensively, it didn't feel like we were very good, we let two of their players get 24 and 21 points, that really hurt us. It's a game I would love to dissect the film, get a lot of teaching moments from, except we can't do it because we've got a game in 18 hours. The good and bad is we would have loved to win that game, those late game situations are great for our team to go through early in the season, so hopefully we can draw on that later in the season. But we have to quickly turn the page because we have another one tomorrow against a good team that is from the same conference and will do a lot of the same things and we played an extra quarter. But we have no excuses for that, we just have to be 1% better." - UNLV head coach Lindy La Rocque

LADY REBEL NOTES

* - This was the first double-overtime game for UNLV since a 77-73 loss to UNR in the 2018 Mountain West Quarterfinals. That game as well was played in the Thomas & Mack Center.

* - UNLV was just one point away from having all five starters in double-figures, as Bailey Thomas posted 13 points and Jade Thomas finished with 10.

* - UNLV opened strong, leading 11-3 and 14-5 before the Tigers closed within six at the end of the first. A 13-0 run by Pacific in the second quarter turned a 19-11 deficit into a 24-19 lead for the visitors.
