LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV softball team (3-3) began the opening day of the Marucci Desert Classic on a high note, notching its first shutout of the season 8-0 over Montana (4-2) behind five no-hit innings by sophomore Jenny Bressler. It was the first no-hitter by a UNLV pitcher since former Rebel standout Amanda Oliveto threw one on March 17, 2013 against Massachusetts and just the 16th overall in 36 seasons.
The Rebels handed the Grizzlies just their second loss of the season after Bressler stymied the Montana hitters and the Rebel offense came alive in the third and fourth innings. The two teams went scoreless over the first two frames, which included Bressler striking out the side to start the game. The right-hander ran into a little bit of trouble in the third inning, loading the bases on three walks, but her sixth strikeout of the game ended the the Grizzlies best threat.
In the bottom half of the inning UNLV went to work at the plate. After a single from freshman Maddie Schmidt and a walk by Mia Trejo, freshman Caitlin Covington delivered with a two-out two-run double to break the scoreless tie. Junior shortstop Samantha Diaz brought Covington home with a towering two-run home run to left field and after a Statia Cermak walk, sophomore Lauryn Barker hit her own two-run shot. By the end of the inning the Rebels had scored all six runs with two outs to take control of the game. They added two more runs in the fourth on a Schmidt RBI triple and a Trejo sacrifice fly to make it 8-0 as Bressler retired the final six batters to seal the no-hitter.
Bressler finished with eight strikeouts to move to 2-2 on the season, while the freshman pair of Covington and Schmidt combined to go 4-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored.
It was just the fourth time Montana had been no-hit in program history.
