Just Short In Reno

UNLV falls by three in Silver State Series contest Wednesday at UNR 62-59

RENO, Nevada (UNLVRebels.com) -  UNLV came up just short of claiming a season sweep of in-state rival UNR Wednesday night, as the Wolf Pack rallied in the fourth quarter for a 62-59 victory over the Lady Rebels from Lawlor Events Center in Mountain West women's basketball action. After winning the first meeting between the two on a shot at the buzzer, UNLV could not find the same magic again, missing two three-point shots in the final three seconds that would have tied the score. Instead UNLV fell at Reno for the third straight season, and the two teams are now tied at 1-1 each in the Silver State Series, the all-sports competition between the two schools.

UNLV looked on its way to a road victory after taking a 12-point lead midway through the third quarter. The Wolf Pack ended that quarter on an 11-2 run to climb within 43-41, and then scored the first four points of the fourth for a 45-43 advantage.

THE TURNING POINT: After LeTecia Smith tied the game at 51-51 with five minutes to play, the Wolf Pack scored on back-to-back possessions, a three-pointer and a short jumper for a 56-51 advantage. Smith scored again with 2:37 to make it a three-point game, but the Lady Rebels would miss their next six shots, while a key turnover under the UNR basket led to an easy layup for a five-point lead again. UNLV didn't give up, closing within 60-59 on a Smith trey with 15 seconds on the clock. The Wolf Pack made two free throws on the other end with 10 seconds left, leaving UNLV with just enough time for its final two shot attempts that were both off the mark.

STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV was held to 33.3% shooting (6-of-18) in the fourth quarter, while the Wolf Pack hit 8-of-12 (66.7%). UNR also finished with a 32-11 edge on bench points, and 21-7 on points off turnovers.

LADY REBEL NOTES

* - Rodjanae Wade finished with 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season, which ties her for fourth all-time at UNLV.

* - Smith led all scorers with 17 points. The next highest scorer was Bailey Thomas with seven.

* - UNLV shot 41.4% (24-of-58) from the floor, and made just 3-of-13 from three-point range for 23.1%.
