REBEL CHECK-IN
JENNY BRESSLERÂ
UNLV SOFTBALL
SOPHOMORE
May 7, 2020
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Sophomore Jenny Bressler, UNLV softball's ace, already has a decorated career as a Rebel in just a season and half in the Scarlet and Gray.
After turning in one arguably one of the best freshman seasons in program history in 2019 that saw her set a freshman record with 23 wins en route to first team all-region and all-conference nod, Bressler was off to another strong start in 2020. The Canton, Michigan, native had already collected 11 wins, including her first career no-hitter on February 13 in a five-inning 8-0 win over Montana, which was also the first no-hitter by a Rebel pitcher since 2013. Bressler earned her second all-conference honor this week after a 1.27 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 82.2 innings pitched in 2020.
Bressler has been key to the program's revival under third-year head coach Kristie Fox. The ace and the Rebels were rolling through the first five weeks of the season, notching a 21-5 record to match the second best start through 26 games in program history. They had won 19 of 21 games after opening the year 2-3 and were gearing up to start Mountain West Conference play when the season abruptly came to an end. Coach Fox and the team knew their best softball was ahead of them as they eyed a league championship and the program's first NCAA tournament appearance since 2009. But that will have to wait one more year.
UNLVRebels.com had a chance this week to check in with the sophomore standout:Â

UNLVRebels.com: Having had time to reflect on the season getting cut short and knowing you should still be playing right now, how are you feeling about everything?
Jenny:Â I am missing being on the field with my teammates right now. We were having another successful season and it was sad to see it end so soon because we were on the path to achieving our goal of making the NCAA tournament. It was tough having that opportunity taken away from us, but we know and understand that it was for the best to keep everyone safe and healthy.
UNLVRebels.com: Even though you didn't get a full season, what was the biggest thing you learned going from your freshman year to your sophomore season?Â
Jenny:Â The biggest thing I learned from my freshman year to sophomore season was how important it is to let my body recover from the long weekends at the field. Getting enough sleep and drinking a lot of water helped me to not feel so tired during the shorter season that we had.
UNLVRebels.com: How have you been staying connected to the team and coaches during the quarantine?
Jenny:Â Our team has been having weekly zoom calls to check in and stay connected as a whole. We also have group messages that we talk in almost every day and stay connected through social media.
UNLVRebels.com: With school almost being over for the semester, what are your plans for the summer?
Jenny:Â For the summer I am planning on staying home with my family in Michigan. I will be working out and playing on a local summer ball team (if that season does not get canceled) to stay in shape.
UNLVRebels.com: Have you been able to pitch at all while you've been at home. If not what have you done to keep your fitness up?Â
Jenny:Â For the first few weeks I was not able to pitch because it was snowing and way too cold to be outside. Since it's warmed back up, I have been able to pitch while at home. It's great having my catcher, Julia, live so close to my hometown because we are able to meet up at a field to get some work in.Â
UNLVRebels.com: What are you looking forward to the most when you can return to campus?
Jenny:Â I am most looking forward to seeing all of my teammates again. I really miss being around all of them and can't wait to start back up in the fall.
UNLVRebels.com:Â What do you want to improve on going into the 2021 season?Â
Jenny:Â I want to improve in all areas going into the 2021 season. I will be working hard in the weight room and on the field during the offseason to become faster and stronger which will help improve my overall performance.
UNLVRebels.com:Â Learned anything new/tried something new since you've been home?
Jenny:Â Since I've been home, I have been trying to learn how to cook and bake. My dad and I have been trying a couple new recipes each week. Not everything has turned out, but I am getting better!
UNLVRebels.com: Binge watched anything?
Jenny:Â I binged watched Outer Banks on Netflix. It was really interesting, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a new show!
