First Half Goals Propel Rebels Past Chicago State for Second Straight Win

UNLV scores twice within first 16 minutes to reach .500 on the season

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – A pair of first half goals from senior Jesus Partida and junior Skyler Goo propelled UNLV men's soccer to its second straight win, as it topped Chicago State 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels earn a sweep of their weekend matches to break even at 6-6 overall and improve to 2-3 in WAC play.

UNLV hastily grabbed a 1-0 lead, as Partida netted his first goal of the season via penalty kick in the sixth minute after Goo hit the deck upon drawing contact from Cougar (2-8-2, 0-4-1) defenders in the box. Goo then scored his second goal of the season in the 16th minute, sending in the Scarlet and Gray's game-winning goal on his shot from the left post that followed a feed from junior Gabriel Claudio and senior Marco Gonzalez.

After allowing the Rebels to get on the board first, Chicago State had a quick answer in store with its own double assist on junior Enrique Zamora's equalizer in the eighth minute. However, the Rebels' defensive backline kept the Cougars in check for the remaining 82 minutes to hang on for the victory.

Anchoring the UNLV defense, junior goalkeeper Miguel Duenas, Jr. came away with his second win on the year after recording a season-high tying two saves in the full 90 minutes for the second straight contest.

The Rebels will now embark on a three-game road trip spanning the next two weeks, beginning with a contest at Utah Valley on Saturday at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT.
NEWS & NOTES:
  • The Rebels' 12th-year head coach Rich Ryerson continues to inch towards the 100-win milestone, as his squad's win Sunday puts him at 95 wins as leader of the UNLV men's soccer program.
