Rebels Fall In Five Sets At Boise State Saturday

Mariena Hayden records double-double with season highs of 23 kills and 10 digs; UNLV returns home to host Wyoming on Thursday at 5 p.m.

BOISE, Idaho (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team lost at Boise State in five sets by scores of 17-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-19 and 10-15 Saturday afternoon at Bronco Gym.

The Rebels (14-5, 5-3) were led by fifth-year senior Mariena Hayden, who recorded a season- and match-high 23 kills along with a season-high 10 digs for her second double-double of the season. Senior Kate Brennan led the team in hitting percentage at .500 with seven kills and no errors, and sophomore Arien Fafard had a team-high 30 assists with a season- and match-high three service aces. Senior Lauryn Burt contributed 28 assists and junior Shelby Capllonch had a team-high 16 digs.

Boise State (15-5, 4-4) was led by Lauren Ohlinger's 14 kills, Danielle Boss' 42 assists and Allison Casillas' 17 digs. Jessica Donahue had a match-high hitting percentage of .600 with 12 kills and no errors.

The match was a back-and-forth affair with the two teams alternating set victories. UNLV led in kills (65-54) and the two teams hit an identical percentage of .248. The Rebels also led in assists (64-50) and both teams recorded 64 digs. It was the Rebels' second straight road loss in the maximum number of sets.

  • Hayden is No. 1 all-time at UNLV in career service aces (306; 190 ahead of second place) and kills (1,713). She is No. 4 in career digs with 1,275.

  • UNLV concluded its Spring 2021 season with a record-breaking campaign that saw it win the Mountain West title, going undefeated in regular-season play (12-0) and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the season 13-1 overall.

  • UNLV returned nine letterwinners from last season including All-American and MW Player of the Year Mariena Hayden, and All-MW First Team performer Kate Brennan.

  • Also returning to the squad were Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos, Lauryn Burt, Shelby Capllonch (honorable mention All-MW), Arien Fafard, Jordyn Freeman, Paola Garcia and Paris Oliveira. There are eight newcomers, which include six freshmen and a pair of international student-athletes.

  • UNLV is led by fourth-year head coach Dawn Sullivan, who was honored following the Spring 2021 season with the MW's Coach of the Year award.

  • For the first time in program history, the Rebels were predicted to finish atop the MW volleyball standings by the league's 11 head coaches as the preseason poll was released in August. Hayden was chosen as the Preseason Conference Player of the Year.
