Rebels Knock Off First-Place Fresno State On Senior Day

UNLV scores three second-half goals to shutout the Bulldogs 3-0 in home finale

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's soccer team made senior day on Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field extra special as the Rebels took down first-place Fresno State 3-0 behind a trio of second-half goals. Junior midfielder Lourdes Bosch continued her tear, scoring the game-winner in the 54th minute on a free kick - her third straight game with a free-kick score - then set up each of the insurance goals with her sixth and seventh assists on the year. Freshman keeper Riley Liebsack and the Rebel defense clamped down on the Bulldogs to record a third shutout in its last four games.

UNLV improved to 12-7 overall and 5-5 in the Mountain West. After starting league play 1-4, the Rebels have won four of their last five to climb back into postseason contention.

In a game that the Scarlet and Gray needed to come away from with points to keep its postseason hopes alive, UNLV took control after halftime and earned the important three points in Mountain West play to move into the sixth spot in the standings. The top six teams will earn a berth into the Mountain West Tournament the first week of November and with just one regular season game remaining, just four points separate the second (Fresno State, 19 points) and sixth place (UNLV, 15 points). UNLV can clinch a berth with a tie at Silver State Series rival UNR on Thursday night, but a win could potentially take the Rebels higher than sixth depending on the outcome of the other final league contests on rivalry weekend.

After a defensive battle in the first half ended scoreless with seven combined shots between the squads, UNLV came out as the aggressor and it paid off in the 54th minute when Lourdes Bosch drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box. In almost an identical spot as her free kick strike in Friday's 1-0 win against San Jose State, Bosch struck it perfectly into the top right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead. Even with the lead, UNLV never let up with freshman Kennedi Schmidt scoring in the 73rd minute after Bosch found her running behind the Bulldog defense and Hevani Haunga scoring in the 85th minute after a Bosch cross into the box to seal the victory.

Liebsack was again strong in the net, with her four saves coming at key moments to thwart dangerous opportunities for Fresno State. Despite being out-shot for just the third time in 10 conference games, the Rebels were finally able to turn more of their shots into scores to propel them to the upset win.

As part of Sunday's senior celebration eight Rebel seniors - Kaila Ambrosio, Samantha Bailley, Taylor Clark, Alyssa Granados, Aubree Incardone, Moriah Lucas, Jadyn Nogues, and Ariana Reyes - were honored prior to their final home game at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

UNLV's Silver State Series match at UNR is set to kickoff at 6:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network .
