COLORADO SPRINGS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's soccer team picked up its first win in Mountain West Conference play on Sunday, beating Colorado College (2-8-1, 1-2-1) 2-0 in Colorado Springs. The Rebels used a goal in each half - one from
Alysa Caso and the other from
Ariana Reyes - while notching their fourth shutout of the season to hold off the home team.
With the win, UNLV snapped a three-game skid and improved to 8-5 overall and 1-3 in the Mountain West.
The Rebels out-shot their opponents in two of its three two conference games, but couldn't come away with those victories. Sunday was a different story as they were out-shot 20-11, but were able to leave with the win.
UNLV's first goal came just before halftime as defender
Haley Halbersma launched a ball from midfield to a streaking Caso, who one touched it and bounced it over the CC keeper's head for the 1-0 lead in the 41st minute. The Rebels added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute after
Lourdes Bosch attacked outside the box and used a nifty backwards pass to set up Reyes for a 30-yard shot that skimmed just under the crossbar for the insurance goal.
It was Halbersma's first career assist and the third goal for Caso, which is now tied for best on the team in 2021, while Bosch recorded her team-best fourth assist and it was Reyes' first goal of the year.
The Scarlet and Gray return home next weekend, hosting San Diego State on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and New Mexico Sunday at 1 p.m. at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
