Lady Rebels Avenge Senior Day Loss With 74-62 Win Over Boise State

Thomas scores 18, Young and Byrne add double-doubles in the victory.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -  Four UNLV starters scored at least 13 points each and the Lady Rebels forced 22 turnovers as they avenged a Senior Day loss from a day ago with a 74-62 victory over Boise State Thursday afternoon in the Cox Pavilion in Mountain West women's basketball action. UNLV split the season series to improve to 11-8 overall, 9-5 in league play while the Broncos dropped to 10-7, 7-7 in the MW.

After falling behind 11-2 at the start and giving up 40 points to Boise State's Jade Loville in the first game of the series, it was a different story in game two. UNLV only allowed four points in the first eight minutes of the game on the way to an 11-4 advantage. Loville meanwhile did finish with 14 points, but had only two in the first half and finished 4-of-14 shooting from the floor. Though Boise State made a run in both the ends of the first and second quarters, UNLV still held a 11-9 edge after the first quarter and 31-27 at the halftime break.

THE TURNING POINT: The game was still in close in the third, a 33-30 lead for UNLV, when the Lady Rebels took over with a 19-5 run over the next six minutes. Desi-Rae Young and Delaynie Byrne combined for the first 10 points of the run, while a pair of Anna Blount free throws put UNLV ahead 52-35 with 3:05 on the clock in the third. The lead grew to as high as 19 midway through the fourth before the Broncos managed to cut it down to the final 12-point margin.

LADY REBEL OF THE GAME: After suffering a loss on her Senior Day, Las Vegas native Bailey Thomas came back with a team-high 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while also posting three assists and three steals in the victory.

STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV forced 22 turnovers, leading to a 28-12 advantage on points off turnovers for the afternoon.

QUOTEABLE: "Today we definitely were where we like to be in the scoring column. The biggest thing we wanted to see was a better effort, and I wanted to come into halftime and at the end of the game and be able to answer the question, are we proud of our effort? And I was able to do that today at halftime, and then obviously to finish the game the way we did in the second half. Proud of our response today, we have a young group and to have that kind of turnaround in such a short time was impressive. I know what we're capable of, now we have four games left in the regular season and we need that kind of effort every night." - UNLV head coach Lindy La Rocque
