Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Rebels Earn Road Draw At Seattle

UNLV has earned ties with two of the top three teams from the WAC preseason poll.

SEATTLE (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV was just minutes away from a big road victory, but still came home with a point in the conference standings as the Rebels tied preseason WAC favorite Seattle 1-1 in double-overtime Saturday night in college men's soccer action from University Field. The Rebels (0-1-2) have now tied two of the top three teams from the preseason conference poll, and though they currently are ninth in the standings with two points, they are just two points out of a tie for first place as well.

The Rebels got on the board 82 seconds into the contest when Bailey Letherman's corner kick found the back of the goal. That gave UNLV a 1-0 lead that lasted nearly the entire game, despite the Redhawks holding a decided shot advantage in the first two halves at 16-8.

The game was winding down in the final minutes when Seattle found an equalizer in the 84th minute. Both teams had chances to win the final minutes, but a key development happened in the final seconds when a Rebel was pulled down from behind on a breakaway attempt, just inches outside of the box. That resulted in a red card for Seattle's Abdel Kuku, and would mean UNLV would have a man advantage in the overtime periods. The Rebels took advantage by taking all eight shots of the first overtime period. The game was still tied however, and then midway though the second overtime period, a Rebel defender was handed a second yellow card, leading to his loss as well and making the teams at even strength. That limited the offense for both teams, with only three total shots, and the game would end in the 1-1 tie.

Miguel Duenas Jr., making his second career start for UNLV, notched five saves while allowing the one goal. UNLV was outshot by one for the game, 18-17, though shots on goal were 9-6 in favor of the Rebels.

NEXT TIME OUT: UNLV returns home to host Houston Baptist in a Friday, March 5 contest that will kick off at 7 pm at Johann Memorial Field.
