Rebels Drop Doubleheader At Third-Ranked UCLA

UNLV falls in both road games at UNLV Friday to open weekend in LA

LOS ANGELES, CA (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV softball team (11-6) faced a tough test on Friday, taking on third-ranked UCLA (15-1) in a doubleheader at Easton Field in its first road games of the season. The Bruins showed why they are one of the top three teams in the country and the Rebels couldn't get anything going in the pair of 10-0 and 8-0 five-inning losses.

UNLV moved to 11-6 on the season.

The Rebels used five pitchers on the day, with Jenny Bressler and Charlie Masterson making the two starts in games one and two, respectively. Freshmen Kaylie Northrop, Jenna Perez and Jasmine Martin all saw time in relief.

Freshman Janyssa Martin and sophomore Maddie Schmidt registered the Rebels' hits on the afternoon.

Game 1 Recap: UCLA jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and added four more runs in the second to make it 8-0 through two. The Rebels couldn't get the bats going against Rachel Garcia, but freshman Janyssa Martin did connect on a hit in the second, which was the first given up by Garcia this year. UNLV's best chance to score came in the third when freshman Alyssa Lopez reached on an error and junior Lauryn Barker drew a walk to put two on, but the Rebels couldn't bring them home. The Bruins added two more runs in the third and the game ended in the fifth with UNLV unable to cut into the UCLA lead.

Game 2 Recap: The Bruins used another first-inning two-run home run to jump out to an early lead, then extended the lead to 3-0 in the second. But Charlie Masterson and the Rebels were able to keep it there until the fifth inning when UCLA tacked on five runs in the bottom of the fifth to end it at 8-0.

UP NEXT: The Rebels will be right back at it with another doubleheader Saturday, heading a short distance to Loyola Marymount. The action gets underway with a noon first pitch.
