Lady Rebel Season Ends In MW Quarterfinals To Wyoming

Cowgirls set tournament record with 15 three-pointers.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV ran into a scorching-hot Wyoming squad Monday night, as the Cowgirls knocked down a Mountain West tournament record 15 three-pointers to end the Lady Rebels season in the quarterfinals by a final score of 72-56 from the Thomas & Mack Center. The loss snapped No. 2 seed UNLV's five-game win streak, and likely ended its season at 15-9 overall, while the seventh-seeded Wyoming squad won its fourth straight to improve to 12-9.

UNLV held an early 5-2 lead just over two minutes into the game, but then managed just one more basket the rest of the quarter. Wyoming meanwhile would connect on three unanswered treys, the third of which put the Cowgirls up 11-5. Jacinta Buckely banked in a running shot to close UNLV within four, until the Cowgirls finished the quarter with four of the final five points, and the Lady Rebels never came within two possessions the rest of the game.

After falling behind by 15 early in the third quarter, the Lady Rebels attempted to rally, scoring eight unanswered points to close within 36-29 at the 5:29 mark thanks to a layup from Bailey Thomas. Wyoming countered with a 15-4 run, the last nine again coming off three straight threes, to end the third quarter up 54-36.

STAT OF THE GAME: Wyoming set a new MW Tournament record thanks to a 15-32 performance from behind the arc, for 46.9%. 30 of the Cowgirls 72 points came from the three-point line, while the Lady Rebels were held to just 5-of-20 (25%) from three-point land, for a difference of 20 points.

LADY REBEL OF THE GAME: Desi-Rae Young, the MW Freshman of the Year, scored a career and game-high 21 points, off 7-of-10 shooting and 7-of-11 at the free throw line. She also added eight rebounds in the contest.

QUOTEABLE - "Obviously not the outcome we wanted. Credit Wyoming, Gerald does a great job, honestly I wasn't excited to play them from the get go. We know what they are capable of, they made some big time plays and shots. Our ladies were really trying and playing hard, but they kept finding a way to get open, while offensively we could never get into the flow and tempo that we wanted, and you have to credit their defense for that. They are one of the top defensive teams in the conference and you saw that tonight. This one hurts really bad. We've got some upset young ladies in the locker room, which is a good thing. Because we're really proud of what we've done and how far we've come. But we're upset because we expect to win. That's the culture we're setting, and the standard and the expectations that we have for our program going forward. that we expect to win these kinds of games. And while we're not there yet we're pretty dang close." - UNLV head coach Lindy La Rocque
