BOISE, ID (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's soccer team concluded its 2021 spring campaign with a 1-0 loss in the regular-season finale at Boise State Sunday.
Despite the defeat, the Rebels finished the shortened Covid campaign at 5-4-1 and tied for third with the Broncos in the West Division. It was an impressive first season under head coach Jenny-Ruiz Williams as UNLV finished tied for the fourth-best record in the conference overall after being picked to finish ninth in the preseason coaches poll. All four of the Rebels losses came on the road, while they stayed unbeaten at home at 4-0-1. During the altered campaign that featured divisions for one season only, the Rebels played everyone in the West Division two times and never lost twice to the same opponent.
Sunday's match began with a quick score by Boise State as the Broncos were able to get one past starting keeper Elly Renada less than a minute into the game. The Rebels defense clamped down after that, allowing just a total of six shots over the next 89 minutes. The rest of the first half played pretty evenly as the shots were tied 4-4 after 45 minutes of game time.
In the second half, the Rebels came out the aggressor and put the pressure on the Bronco defense, but unfortunately couldn't find the equalizer. UNLV did out shoot BSU 10-7 for the game, marking the eighth time in 10 games this spring they've bested their opponent in that category. Sophomore Lourdes Bosch led the way with five shots, while fellow sophomore Marcella Brooks checked in with two. Brooks had the best opportunity to tie it late in the second half as her powerful kick was tipped just over the crossbar by the Bronco keeper in the 75th minute.
Reynada made the start in goal for UNLV and finished with two saves in the senior's final game of her Rebel career.Â
