Win Streak Snapped At San Jose

UNLV closes out regular season Saturday against Grand Canyon

SAN JOSE, California (UNLVRebels.com) - In a key WAC men's soccer contest, San Jose State took advantage of a defensive misplay to score the only goal of the game, snapping UNLV's three-game win streak Monday night from the Spartan Soccer Complex. The Rebels, who came into the night tied with SJSU with the chance of the regular season title still alive, dropped to 4-3-2 instead, good for fourth place. UNLV has already clinched a spot in next week's WAC Tournament, in which the top six teams qualify for.

The Rebels had the majority of scoring chances on the night, and finished with an 11-8 edge on total shots and 4-3 on shots on goal. SJSU would score the winning goal in the 68th minute when they took it down the right side and penetrated the Rebel defense, dribbling in from the right baseline before finding an unmarked Rudy Castro right in front of the goal. Castro scored to the far post, putting the Spartans up 1-0 while stopping Rebel goalkeeper Miguel Duenas Jr.'s shutout streak at 469 minutes. It was the first goal allowed by Duenas since February in a 1-1 tie at Seattle on Feb. 27.

Duenas finished the game with two saves in 90 minutes of action. Gabe Claudio and Bailey Letherman meanwhile each had a pair of shots to pace the Rebels offensively.

QUOTEABLE:  "Disappointing loss in San Jose tonight, as I felt our players defended very well throughout the game. We just need to be cleaner in transitional moments and keep possession a little longer. San Jose is technical and quick, and converted their chance to win the game. They are a very experienced team with 12 seniors. We are excited to get back to Peter Johann Memorial Field Saturday, for the finale against undefeated Grand Canyon. That will be our focus for the week."  - UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson.

NEXT TIME OUT: UNLV hosts first-place Grand Canyon Saturday at 7 pm at Johann Memorial Field in the regular season finale for both teams.
