Sharman Silences Aztecs Sunday

UNLV baseball completes weekend sweep of San Diego State with 8-1 behind Josh Sharman’s complete-game win and Jack-Thomas Wold’s three hit, three RBI and two runs.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team completed the weekend sweep of the San Diego State Aztecs Sunday with its 8-1 victory at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The win upped the Rebels' home mark to 17-3 on the year.

With the win, the Rebels improved to 19-11 overall and 14-10 in the Mountain West. The Aztecs saw their record drop to 25-15 on the year and 17-13 in league play after their third straight loss.

The contest was a pitcher's duel between UNLV's Josh Sharman (1-3) and SDSU's Brian Leonhardt (1-2) through four innings until the Rebel offense broke through with three runs in the fifth inning off a two-run triple from Jack-Thomas Wold and a sac fly from Edarian Williams.

Sharman maintained his dominance through the final out, going the distance for the first nine-inning complete game of the season by a Rebel pitcher. The left-hander struck out six against no walks, and only allowed one run off seven hits.

The Rebels opened the game up in the in the seventh with two more runs off a solo homer from Wold and an RBI single from Myles Denson.

SDSU was able to breakthrough offensively in the eight with an RBI double from Mike Jarvis; however, UNLV answered with three insurance tallies off a two-run single from Eric Bigani and a sac fly from Rylan Charles.

Wold was responsible for three RBI and two runs, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Bigani chipped in two RBI and one run with one hit. The Rebels also got two hits and an RBI from Denson. Brooks and Alarcon matched Wold's run output, scoring twice each.

Leonhardt was saddled with the loss after throwing the initial 4.0 innings, giving up three runs off six hits and two hits. The rest of the Aztec staff allowed five runs (three earned) off four hits and two walks.

NOTES:
-Wold upped his hitting streak and reached-base streak to 16 games apiece. During this stretch, he is hitting .507 (34-for-67) with nine multiple-hit games. Eighteen of his 34 hits have gone for extra bases (10 homers and seven doubles) and produced a 1.090 slugging percentage, while those hits and 10 walks have resulted in a .564 on-base percentage. He's also added 25 RBI and 23 runs.
-Wold is the second Rebel to reach the 16-game hit streak mark this season, as Denson had a season-best 18-game stretch halted last Sunday.
-With his multiple-hit and multiple-RBI games Sunday, Wold has achieved the former 18 times and the latter 11 times, and leads both categories.

UP NEXT: UNLV wraps up its regular season next weekend in Fresno, California, with a three-game, Mountain West series against the Fresno State Bulldogs. The Rebels and Bulldogs will play twice Saturday and once Sunday. First pitch for both days is scheduled for 1:35 pm.
