CEDAR CITY(UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's soccer team hit the road for the first time this season and came away with the win in a 3-0 shutout over Southern Utah Thursday afternoon in Cedar City.
The Rebels used a pair of first-half goals from junior
Marcella Brooks and sophomore
Nailah Harpring to take control of the game before a Thunderbird own goal in the second half provided the final margin of victory. The scores were the first of the year for both Brooks and Harpring, who led UNLV with five goals last spring during her freshman campaign.
For the second straight game, UNLV scored within the first 10 minutes to take control early. In the sixth minute, midfielder
Jules Dominguez used some fancy footwork in the corner to get past her defender and send a cross right at the SUU keeper. While she was able to knock down the ball, she wasn't able to coral it and Brooks was there to clean it up, taking a touch to her right before knocking into the net for the 1-0 lead. Twelve minutes later, defender
Alyssa Granados sent a bullet towards the goal that hit the crossbar and ricocheted right to the foot of Harpring. The sophomore forward didn't hesitate and pushed it past the keeper to double the UNLV lead less than 20 minutes into the game. SUU's own goal came in the 49th minute early in the second half.
UNLV's defense clamped down on the Thunderbird attack, allowing just six total shots as the Rebels outshot the host team 15-6 for the game. Redshirt sophomore
Charlotte Brisley, an offseason transfer from Oregon, made a second straight start in goal, collecting one save in 80 minutes of action before giving way to redshirt freshman
Taylor Book.
With the win, the Scarlet and Gray improved to 9-1 all-time against the Thunderbirds.
The Rebels will return home to finish out the weekend with a Sunday morning contest hosting UC San Diego at Peter Johann Memorial Field. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. Admission is $6 per adult when purchased in advance of game day and free for kids in high school or younger.
