Rebels Win Fourth Straight With Sweep At Cornell

Milica Tasic records her second double-double of the season as UNLV wins again Friday at Cornell Invitational in New York.

ITHACA, N.Y. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team, which is receiving votes in the national rankings, won for the second time on Friday with another 3-0 sweep - this time against Cornell at the Cornell Invitational at Newman Arena. It also marked the team's fourth straight win.

The Rebels (6-2) won with scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-14 against the Big Red. Earlier in the day, UNLV defeated Niagara 3-0 to open Invitational play.

UNLV senior outside hitter Milica Tasic had her second double-double of the season with match highs of 11 kills and a season-high 15 digs against Cornell. Fifth-year senior outside hitter Mariena Hayden also recorded 11 kills and added a season-high eight digs. Junior middle blocker Jordyn Freeman tallied six kills without an error to hit .750 for the match, while sophomore setter Arien Fafard led the team in assists with 23.

UNLV recorded 41 kills to Cornell's 34 and outhit the Big Red .280 to .128. UNLV also led 39-31 in assists.

Joanna Chang led Cornell (2-2) in kills with eight, while Emma Worthington had a double-double with 24 assists and 14 digs.


NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will conclude play at the Cornell Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT against Bucknell. The match will be livestreamed and live stats will also be available.

NEWS & NOTES:

  • UNLV is 2-0 so far in the Cornell Invitational, winning both matches on Friday.

  • Hayden is No. 2 all-time at UNLV in career kills and currently has 1,547 for her collegiate career. She has also moved into the No. 5 spot in career digs with 1,185.

  • UNLV has now won 35 of its last 40 matches dating back to 2019.

  • UNLV concluded its Spring 2021 season with a record-breaking campaign that saw the Rebels win the Mountain West title, going undefeated in regular-season play (12-0) and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the season 13-1 overall.

  • UNLV returned nine letterwinners from last season including All-American and MW Player of the Year Mariena Hayden, and All-MW First Team performer Kate Brennan.

  • Also returning to the squad are Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos, Lauryn Burt, Shelby Capllonch (honorable mention All-MW), Arien Fafard, Jordyn Freeman, Paola Garcia and Paris Oliveira. There are eight newcomers, which include six freshmen and a pair of international student-athletes.

  • UNLV is led by fourth-year head coach Dawn Sullivan, who was honored following the Spring 2021 season with the MW's Coach of the Year award.

  • For the first time in program history, the Rebels were predicted to finish atop the MW volleyball standings by the league's 11 head coaches as the preseason poll was released last month. Hayden was chosen as the Preseason Conference Player of the Year.
