Rebels Sweep UNR In First Silver State Series Matchup

UNLV has won eight of its last nine matches, returns to Cox Pavilion for Mountain West home opener Thursday.

RENO, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team dominated UNR Saturday with a 3-0 sweep at Virginia Street Gym in the first matchup of the Silver State Series presented by IBEW Local 401 and Nevada Donor Network.

The 25-16, 25-20, 25-13 victory marked the Rebels' eighth win in their last nine matches.

UNLV (10-3, 1-1) was led by senior outside hitter Milica Tasic's match highs of nine kills (with only one hitting error) and a .444 hitting percentage. Senior setter Lauryn Burt had a team-high 14 assists, while fifth-year senior outside hitter Mariena Hayden led the way with three service aces. Junior libero/defensive specialist Paris Oliveira added a match-high 12 digs.

Kyla Waiters led UNR (3-10, 0-2) with seven kills, Andrea Alcaraz had a match-high 20 assists and Kaila Spevak had 10 digs.

UNLV recorded 32 kills to the Wolf Pack's 24, outhit them .244 to -.028, and led in service aces (6-2), blocks (14-6) and digs (43-35).


NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will return home to the Cox Pavilion for its Mountain West home opener on Thursday, September 30 vs. Air Force at 6:30 p.m. It will be Military/First Responders Appreciation Night.

  • UNLV has now won 39 of its last 45 matches dating back to 2019.

  • Hayden is No. 1 all-time at UNLV in career service aces (293; 177 ahead of second place) and kills (1,615). She has also moved up to No. 4 in career digs with 1,224.

  • UNLV concluded its Spring 2021 season with a record-breaking campaign that saw the Rebels win the Mountain West title, going undefeated in regular-season play (12-0) and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the season 13-1 overall.

  • UNLV returned nine letterwinners from last season including All-American and MW Player of the Year Mariena Hayden, and All-MW First Team performer Kate Brennan.

  • Also returning to the squad are Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos, Lauryn Burt, Shelby Capllonch (honorable mention All-MW), Arien Fafard, Jordyn Freeman, Paola Garcia and Paris Oliveira. There are eight newcomers, which include six freshmen and a pair of international student-athletes.

  • UNLV is led by fourth-year head coach Dawn Sullivan, who was honored following the Spring 2021 season with the MW's Coach of the Year award.

  • For the first time in program history, the Rebels were predicted to finish atop the MW volleyball standings by the league's 11 head coaches as the preseason poll was released last month. Hayden was chosen as the Preseason Conference Player of the Year.
