HAMILTON, N.Y. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team defeated Colgate 3-1 (27-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-19) Wednesday night at Cotterell Court to begin its four-match New York road trip. It marked the team's second straight win.
The Rebels (4-2) had five players record at least nine kills in the match, led by Endicott, N.Y. native Kate Brennan with 10. The senior middle blocker also hit a team-high .500 for the match in her homecoming.
Fifth-year senior outside hitter Mariena Hayden, sophomore outside hitter/middle blocker Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos, freshman middle blocker Chloe Thomas and senior outside hitter Milica Tasic all had nine kills. Senior setter Lauryn Burt and sophomore setter Arien Fafard paced the Rebels in assists with 21 and 17, respectively, while junior outside hitter Shelby Capllonch and Tasic led in digs with 16 and 12.
The Rebels outhit Colgate .207 to .140 for the match, also recording nine service aces to the Raiders' three. Fafard, Arretche-Ramos and Tasic each recorded a match-high-tying two aces. UNLV tallied 53 total kills to Colgate's 42 and led in assists 44-32.
Colgate (1-5) was led by Harper Snyder who recorded 15 kills and hit .545 for the match. Julia Kurowski led in assists with 28, while Caroline Altergott had 16 digs.
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will continue its road trip back east by competing at the Cornell Invitational Friday-Saturday, September 10-11. The Rebels will face Niagara on Friday at 9 a.m. PT, Cornell (also on Friday) at 4 p.m. PT, and Bucknell on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT. Hayden is No. 2 all-time at UNLV in career kills and currently has 1,526 kills for her collegiate career.

UNLV has now won 33 of its last 38 matches dating back to 2019.

UNLV concluded its Spring 2021 season with a record-breaking campaign that saw the Rebels win the Mountain West title, going undefeated in regular-season play (12-0) and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the season 13-1 overall.

UNLV returned nine letterwinners from last season including All-American and MW Player of the Year Mariena Hayden, and All-MW First Team performer Kate Brennan.

Also returning to the squad are Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos, Lauryn Burt, Shelby Capllonch (honorable mention All-MW), Arien Fafard, Jordyn Freeman, Paola Garcia and Paris Oliveira. There are eight newcomers, which include six freshmen and a pair of international student-athletes.

UNLV is led by fourth-year head coach Dawn Sullivan, who was honored following the Spring 2021 season with the MW's Coach of the Year award.

For the first time in program history, the Rebels were predicted to finish atop the MW volleyball standings by the league's 11 head coaches as the preseason poll was released last month. Hayden was chosen as the Preseason Conference Player of the Year.
