RIVERSIDE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) — An 86th-minute equalizer spoiled UNLV's chances for their first conference win of the season at Cal Baptist Friday night.
UNLV (1-7-7 overall, 0-4-3 WAC) and CBU (7-5-3, 3-2-2) played to a 1-1 draw. It was the Rebels' seventh tie of the season, which is second only to St. Joseph's (8) in NCAA Division I men's soccer.
The Rebels held possession advantage through the first 52 minutes when CBU suffered an own goal. CBU defender David Cordes deflected Cesar Carbajal's touch from
Nico Clasen's free kick inside the near post, giving UNLV a 1-0 lead.
From there CBU out-shot UNLV 17 to 1 and accumulated a 6-0 superiority on corner kicks. UNLV's defense absorbed blow after blow, but the Lancers finally broke through with six minutes to play. Bryan Iliohan fired Adolfo Pino's cross just inside the right post for the equalizer.Â
UNLV goalkeeper Andrew Sway faced 22 shots and recorded a career-high six saves.
The draw and Grand Canyon's 4-1 win at Seattle U Friday night mathematically eliminated UNLV from reaching the WAC Tournament this season.
UNLV returns home Sunday for its senior night, hosting Utah Valley. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The UNLV Soccer Federation will host a free tailgate with complimentary drinks provided by Tenaya Creek Brewery starting two hours prior to kickoff.
