Rebels Stay Red Hot After Sweeping SDSU

SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (23-3, 14-1 MW) swept San Diego State (8-19, 6-10 MW) in a quick three-set match Thursday evening in the Peterson Gym. The Rebels also took the win over the Aztecs in four sets earlier this season (Oct. 1) at home in the Cox Pavilion.

This win marks the 14th consecutive win for the Scarlet & Gray. After six tie scores in the first set, the Rebels were able to come out victorious with a score of 25-19 before absolutely dominating in the second frame by a score of 25-12. The third and final frame began with a five-point run for the Aztecs but ended with a UNLV sweep with a score of 25-23. 

REBEL OF THE MATCH: Junior Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos recorded a match-high 12 kills and 13 points, she also tacked on one service ace and two digs. 

The Scarlet & Gray were led defensively by graduate student Jhenna Gabriel's double-digit outing with a match-high 28 assists, followed by freshman Maya Sands who had a match-high and career-high four service aces.

Leading the squad in attack efficiency were sophomore Chloe Thomas and redshirt junior Isabel Martin who hit for .353 and .333, respectively. The hitting contest went to UNLV as they outhit the Aztecs .318 to .112.

UP NEXT: The Rebels will close out the last away game of the regular season with a trip to Fresno to play against the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m.

OTHER NEWS & NOTES
- Dating back to 2019, UNLV has gone 80-15 in its last 95 matches. The Rebels have won 23 of 26 matches this season and 49 of its last 58.
- UNLV returned eight letterwinners this season. Also returning to the squad from last season were Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos, Arien Fafard, Jordyn Freeman, Chloe Thomas, Isha Knight, Keyana Cruse, Dakota Quinlan, Livvy Setla, Isabel Martin and Thea Sweder. There are eight newcomers, which include three freshmen, a trio of transfers and a pair of graduate transfers.
- UNLV is led by fifth-year head coach Dawn Sullivan, who looks to guide her squad to the postseason for the fifth straight season. 
- Junior Arien Fafard had her 1,000th career assist during the opening weekend of the Rebels' 2022 campaign at UNT. 
- The Rebels defeated No. 19 Kansas on September 10, 2022, making that the second win over a ranked team since 2016. The first being then No. 25 Washington State during the fall 2021 season at the Rebel Challenge (Sept. 4, 2021). 
- Head Coach Dawn Sullivan notched 100 wins during the match against then MW leaders San Jose State, 3-1.
- UNLV was the first MW program to clinch a spot in the MW Tournament held November 23-25 in Fort Collins, Colorado.
