LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — The Lady Rebels overcame a sluggish start to earn a fourth consecutive double-digit victory Sunday afternoon.
UNLV (4-0) routed CSU Bakersfield (1-2) 74-42 at the Cox Pavilion.Â
Junior center
Desi-Rae Young led all players with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Young scored on the opening possession but UNLV missed seven straight field goals as the Roadrunners sped away with a 12-0 scoring run.Â
"We just had to pick our energy up," UNLV Head Coach
Lindy La Rocque said. "We didn't have the started that we needed. We had to learn that lesson quickly and change it."
The Lady Rebels' bench coupled with a defensive shift provided the spark.Â
Following the first media timeout, UNLV switched to a zone pressure that stifled CSUB. UNLV forced two straight turnovers and
Kiara Jackson scored six of the next 11 points to take the lead for the first time halfway through the second period.
"This week in practice we focused on our press and our zone. We knew, going into today, we were going to play it to see it against someone else. Our practice paid off. You have to play harder in a press, and that's where it helped us most."
UNLV held CSUB to 1-of-13 shooting in the second period and went to the locker rooms with a 20-point scoring run that gave the Lady Rebels a 37-20 advantage at halftime.
UNLV's bench scored 35 points. Reserve guard
Kenadee Winfrey counted career highs with seven points and eight rebounds.
Kiara Jackson and
Alyssa Brown each scored nine points. Ashley Scoggin added six.
"We know what we have on our bench. Frankly, we have a lot," La Rocque said. "Each game is going to call for something different. Kenadee got the first opportunity, and she stayed out there because she was doing great things."
La Rocque pulled any remaining starters with 6 ½ to play, leading 62-36. UNLV only increased its lead from there.
The Lady Rebels host the UNLV Thanksgiving Tournament starting Friday, Nov. 25. UAlbany, East Tennessee State, George Washington, Illinois State, Louisiana Tech, Stetson and UC San Diego join UNLV in the winner-take-all competition.
