LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — Career-high scoring games from
Desi-Rae Young and
Kiara Jackson powered UNLV (10-2) to a 93-73 victory over Northern Arizona (6-7) in the team's final non-conference matchup Wednesday night.
The Lady Rebels' offensive onslaught stumped the Lumberjacks. Young scored UNLV's first 6 points and kicked off a 19-point scoring run.Â
Young needed just three points to reach 1,000 in her career. She scored 10 times that for her first-ever 30-point game and filled the box score with 14 rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks in 28 minutes.
"Desi knows we need her at her best all of the time," UNLV Head Coach
Lindy La Rocque said. "She wasn't going to let this one go by today. Not because of her 1,000 points, but because she knows her team needed her really badly. They needed to feel the right way and they did."
UNLV was coming off a 25-point loss at Oklahoma State on Sunday and had not beaten Northern Arizona in two previous attempts under La Rocque.
"We were going to be the aggressor," Young said. "We could have beat them every other year. It gets personal. We wanted to show them that we could mess with them, but they couldn't mess with us."
Young's mentality was shared across the UNLV lineup. With starting forwards
Alyssa Brown and
Nneka Obiazor unavailable, the Lady Rebels' supporting cast shined under the spotlight.
Jackson scored 9 of UNLV's final 12 points, totaling a career-best 21.Â
"Kiara is just a baller," La Rocque said. "She is a true point guard. I don't think there are many of them out there—at any level. When the game is at the end, I trust the ball in her hands. She is showing why and proving me right, thankfully."
Keyana Wilfred added four points and nine rebounds.
Jasmyn Lott scored seven points.
NAU whittled its deficit to 5 in the second period but
Ashley Scoggin scored a 3 and a layup unanswered to push UNLV's lead to double digits. Young then drew a foul on a layup for a 3-point play that secured a double-double before halftime.
UNLV's zone pressure frustrated the Lumberjacks into 19 turnovers. After making their first two 3-pointers and taking an 8-4 lead, NAU saw just one of its next 13 shots from beyond the arc fall through the net.
Essence Booker added 12 points and five assists for the Lady Rebels. Emily Rodabaugh led NAU with 26 points spurred by a 6-for-10 3-point shooting performance.
The Lady Rebels under La Rocque are now 14-1 following a loss with a 17-point margin of victory.
UNLV takes a holiday break before returning to the Cox Pavilion against Mountain West foe Wyoming on Thursday, Dec. 29. The Lady Rebels are favored to repeat as conference champions.
"We know the target that we have (on our backs). If we play like we did tonight then I'm confident we'll be successful through conference play.Â
"All records are 0-0. You have to come out and prove yourself every single night."
