STOCKTON, Calif. — A furious rally came up short as UNLV fell to Pacific 75-68 Saturday at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
Desi-Rae Young scored all of her 18 points in the second half and grabbed 12 rebounds to help UNLV close a 19-point third-quarter deficit to 4 late in the game.
"They're a really good team, really well-coached," UNLV Head Coach
Lindy La Rocque said. "It was a battle and we had a lot of self-inflicted wounds."
The Lady Rebels could not take the cap off the bucket in the first half. UNLV hit just seven of 42 field-goal attempts (17 percent) and missed 14 layups before switching ends.
Foul trouble for UNLV's main rotation of post players compounded the poor shooting. Young,
Nneka Obiazor and
Alyssa Brown averaged just nine minutes each over the first 20.
UNLV trailed 35-19 at halftime. The Lady Rebels would score nearly three times as many points in the second half.
"I wasn't sure what team showed up in the first half. I challenged them at halftime to be who we are. I was pretty confident we were going to get back in the game and have a chance to win. We just dug ourselves too big of a hole."
Pacific's Liz Smith popped a 3-pointer to start the second half and push the cushion to 19, exactly the margin the UNLV rallied to win from in last year's matchup between the two teams.
Then Young took over. A UOP turnover led to free throws and then a fast-break feed from
Essence Booker. Young stole a half-court pass on the following possession and kicked to Booker for a pull-up jumper and six unanswered points.
UNLV freshman
Jasmyn Lott raced for a layup and buried a 3 for points on back-to-back possessions. The unanswered scoring cut Pacific's lead to single digits, 48-39, with 2 ½ to play in the third.
Lott matched her collegiate best with 11 points.
The teams traded scores until 6 ½ remained when
Alyssa Durazo-Frescas scored from 3 and, after a Pacific miss, found an unguarded Lott for another 3. The deficit was cut to 6.
Pacific hit three fourth-period 3-pointers and made its free throws down the stretch to fend off the Lady Rebels' final blows.
Durazo-Frescas was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 30 seconds remaining. She made them all to close the margin to 4, but it would be UNLV's final points.
Durazo-Frescas finished with a season-high 11 points. Booker scored 10 with a career-high seven assists.
Pacific was led by a game-high 21 points from Anaya James. Smith scored 13.
It was the Tigers' third win over a Mountain West team this season, having counted victories over UNR and Wyoming.
