LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team defeated San Diego 2-1 during Friday night's contest at Fowler Park & Cunningham Field. The game remained scoreless for five frames until the Rebels tacked on a run at the top of the six and the eighth to secure the first win on the road of their 2022 campaign.Â
The scoreboard only read of hits until the top of the sixth, four for UNLV and two for San Diego, when Diego Alarcon hit his second home run of the season and added the first run of the game to the board. An RBI from Hank Zeisler at the top of the eighth would bring Alarcon home for the second time and secure the lead for the Rebels, 2-0. The Toreros put up a fight in the bottom of the ninth when an RBI from Angelo Peraza guided Jack Costello home, 2-1, but ultimately came up short.Â
Josh Ibarra (2-0) was handed his second win of the season after going 5.0 innings, only allowing two hits and striking out two. Nick Rupp earned the save with 4.0 frames, only allowing four hits and also striking out two.Â
Garrett Rennie (1-1) was saddled with the loss after pitching 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits, one run and 27 at-bats.Â
The Scarlet & Gray closed the gap and tied the overall record between the two programs, now 16-16 with the second game of the series on deck for Sunday.
