SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team bested Hawaii, 9-3, Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Rebels evened their record at 3-3 overall and 2-0 away from home while the Rainbow Warriors fell to 2-4.
UNLV took the lead in the second inning with runs by Hank Zeisler, Joey Walls and Jason Sharman, ending the frame leading 3-0. Two consecutive RBIs put Hawaii on the board in the fifth inning followed by an error on UNLV to bring in one more run, tying the score at 3-3.
A walk from Austin Kryszczuk in the bottom of the sixth got the ball rolling for the Rebels, who pushed their lead to 6-3. By the end of the seventh, Rylan Charles, Kryszczuk and Alarcon had come home, adding on three more unearned runs and pushing the Rebels to a six-run lead.
Troy Balko (1-1) earned his first win of the season after going 5.0 innings, only allowing five hits, three runs and striking out three.
Buddie Pindel (1-1) was saddled with the loss after pitching 1.1 innings, allowing two hits, three runs and zero strikeouts.
The overall record between the two programs is now 16-15 with Hawaii having a one-game lead. The pair will meet again back at Earl E. for a three-game series May 6-8.
UP NEXT: The Rebels will finish the two-game series against San Diego Sunday afternoon back at Fowler Park & Cunningham Field, first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
