Rebels Defeat Aztecs In Game One Of Three-Game Series

SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team defeated San Diego State during game one of the three-game conference opening series, 5-2, Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego, California. 

The Rebels saw their record improve to 7-7 (1-0 MW), while the Aztecs dropped to 4-9 (0-1 MW).

REBEL OF THE GAME: Rylan Charles hit 2-for-5 at the plate with one run and two RBIs scored for the Scarlet & Gray. 

TURNING POINT: The Aztecs had a one-run lead coming into the top of the seventh frame, 2-1, only for a double RBI from Charles, that brought in Joey Walls and Edarian Williams, to put the Rebels in the lead for the remainder of the game. 

Nick Rupp (2-0) secured the win after pitching 1.0 innings of relief and not allowing any runs or hits. 

Hayden Nierman (S,2) recorded his second save of the season after going 2.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs or hits and striking out three. 

TJ Fondtain (1-2) was saddled with his second loss of the season after pitching 4.0 innings of relief, allowing three runs off of three hits and only striking out two. 

UP NEXT: UNLV will continue the three-game conference opening series against SDSU Saturday at Tony Gwynn Stadium, first pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
