RENO (UNLVRebels.com) – Shaking off cold and windy weather conditions, the UNLV women's tennis team downed in-state rival UNR 4-2 Thursday at the McArthur Tennis Complex.
The Rebels improved to 15-4 and 5-2 in the Mountain West while the Wolf Pack fell to 8-8 and 2-5. The win puts UNLV in position to pick up three points in the Silver State Series presented by IBEW and Nevada Donor Network, pending another potential meeting in the MW Tournament at the end of the month.
The Rebels set the tone by taking the key doubles point. After the teams split the top two matches, UNLV's
Aura Fang and CoCo Zhao gutted out a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker win on court three to earn the 1-0 lead. The duo improved to 16-5 overall and 5-1 in league play this season.
In singles, the hosts eventually tied things at 2 with a pair of quick victories but UNLV prevailed with wins from
Molly Helgesson at the top spot, Zhao on court six and the clincher at No. 3 from senior
Izumi Asano.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Zhao followed up her big doubles win with Fang by rolling over Mathilde Sarcelet, 6-1, 6-1 to improve to 15-4 overall in singles as a rookie
UP NEXT: UNLV remains in Reno and will take on San Diego State Friday in a neutral-site match scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
