LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – More than 500 UNLV student-athletes and 200 staff members are teaming up this week for the third "Rebels Give Back 100%" campaign.
Â
The initiative, which debuted in 2019 with two days of volunteering, returned last year after pausing in 2020 due to the pandemic. The inaugural campaign saw Rebels serve a total of 1,241 hours in a 24-hour period. In 2021, no less than 14 organizations benefited from the initiative. This year's version sees a week-long effort scheduled to culminate in the largest single volunteering event in the department's history – the Bed Build Day on April 30.
Â
"Each year we ask our fans for their help in supporting our student-athletes, so Rebels Give Back is our chance to help the community in a tangible way," said UNLV Director of Athletics
Erick Harper. "Our student-athletes, coaches and staff value this opportunity to volunteer in different ways each spring with partners across Southern Nevada."
Â
UNLV Athletics is hosting the Bed Build Day in the parking lot of the Thomas & Mack Center and the public is invited to help. The department has partnered with Sleep In Heavenly Peace in a goal to build 100 beds to help Las Vegas youth who are in need of a comfortable place to sleep. The event will take place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. with an eye on setting the organization's local chapter one-day record.
Â
Those interested in helping, can visit UNLVRebels.com/BedBuild to learn more and to register to volunteer. The volunteer event is open to the first 400 individuals.
Â
Donations can be made through the website as well. A fundraising goal of $25,000 has been set to pay for the materials to build 100 beds. Donations are tax-deductible and any excess funds that exceed the goal will be donated directly to the Las Vegas chapter of Sleep In Heavenly Peace for additional supplies.
