LOS ANGELES (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV men's soccer drew scoreless, 0-0, with No. 24 LMU Thursday night, collecting its second straight tie on a ranked opponent's turf.
The Rebels (0-0-2) nearly put the game away in the 62nd minute when
Hayden Prasad broke away from the defense through the left channel. Prasad tipped the ball to center forward
Kai Lange who managed the shot, but LMU goalkeeper Mitchell Wilson retreated directly into the ball's path.
In the 68th minute, Frankie Martinez roped a volley between defenders that rattled the crossbar and landed inches in front of the goal line. Wilson swatted the ball away just as
Louis Hiepen collided with his attack.
A foul on
Daniel Rojas in the next minute set up a free kick and chance for
Donovan Sessoms in the lower right corner, but Wilson corralled the attempt.
"I'm proud of them, I really am," UNLV head coach
BJ Craig said. "It takes a lot of character and grit to keep up that fight against some of the best teams in the country."
UNLV frustrated LMU on its next two possessions, swarming the Lion attack. Defensive packing on the back line resulted in two handballs against LMU to set up another advance by the Rebels' offense.
"It was a collective effort tonight. All the guys did their jobs individually and, late in the game, we have guys sprinting on long runs to help on defense—that shows their mentality. When you do those things, it's hard to break."
Louis Hiepen headed
Nico Clasen's corner kick into the turf on the far side of the box, but Wilson tracked the rebound with his right hand just enough to clip the ball opposite the left post.
Gabe Sanchez punted the resulting corner kick high over the top for UNLV's final shot of the match.
UNLV junior
Andrew Sway made three saves to earn his second clean sheet in as many starts. Including its preseason exhibitions, the Rebels' defense has now held opponents scoreless for 314 minutes, 50 seconds.
"Sway was a rock back there," Craig added. "He was very steady, made good decisions and really led this group tonight."
UNLV next plays host to Cal State Northridge (2-0-1) Sunday, Sept. 4, at 7:30 p.m. It's the home opener for the Rebels at Peter Johann Memorial Field. Advanced purchase single-game tickets are $6.
