LA JOLLA, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) — Carter Jacobus's 83rd-minute penalty kick was the difference as UC San Diego escaped UNLV, 1-0, Sunday night at Triton Soccer Stadium.
UCSD (4-1-1) was awarded a penalty kick after UNLV(0-3-2) center back Theo Minard was called for a handball within the 18-yard box. Minard had little time to react as he sprinted directly in the path of Alan Kim's cross, booted from five yards away, prompting the unfortunate touch.
"It's hard when it comes down to a penalty kick," UNLV head coach
BJ Craig said. "The effort tonight was fantastic. We deserve a win right now with the way we're playing."
UNLV proved to have the more efficient attack in the first half, outshooting UCSD nine to four with three shots on goal. But the Rebels didn't find the back of the net and then had to absorb a volley of attacks in the second half.
"I'm very proud of the response tonight. This team has rebounded in the face of every challenge. We took on two good opponents, on the road, this weekend and showed we can play."
The Rebels return to Las Vegas to host Pacific on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 8:30 p.m. It will be the second game of a doubleheader with the UNLV women's soccer team, who host Cal at 6:30 p.m.
